Project Clean Lake: Protecting Lake Erie and Advancing Northeast Ohio’s Water Infrastructure

Project Clean Lake is a transformative initiative led by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) to significantly improve water quality in Lake Erie and the surrounding region. By addressing combined sewer overflows (CSOs), this multi-billion-dollar program will prevent over 4 billion gallons of untreated sewage from entering local waterways annually, safeguarding public health and the environment.

At the heart of this ambitious program are seven massive underground tunnels, stretching between two and five miles in length and up to 24 feet in diameter. These tunnels are designed to capture and store excess stormwater and sewage during heavy rain events, ensuring the water is treated properly before being released into the environment. Once complete, Project Clean Lake will play a critical role in protecting the region’s waterways, revitalizing urban areas, and fostering long-term environmental sustainability.
