Stiver Engineering Projects Lauded in Tunnel Business Magazine, Including Cover Story

Stiver Engineering projects are making waves in the latest issue of Tunnel Business Magazine, including one project in Dallas, Texas, that is setting records for its sheer size.

In total, seven Stiver projects were included in the pages of the magazine, highlighted by a cover story about the Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel project in Dallas. The tunnel will bring needed infrastructure improvements and 100-year flood protection to areas of east and southeast Dallas that have been affected in recent years by severe storms. It will include 26,385 linear feet of tunneling at a 30-foot finished diameter.

According to Tunnel Business Magazine, work for the project will also require use of the largest hard rock tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever used in the United States—an 11.6-meter-diameter Robbins Main Beam TBM.

Stiver Engineering provided construction consulting services for the contractor prior to and during the tunnel construction. Our work included shoring designs for access shafts, the TBM starter/gripper wall design, shotcrete trolley system for lining the tunnel, several trench safety plan designs, a sound wall design using steel soldier piles and acoustic panels, and a removable shaft cover and rigging details for several liner plate shafts.

The magazine also offered updates on the $142 million Schoharie Reservoir Project in Gilboa, New York. The project, which is expected to be complete in 2022, includes the construction of an intake structure at the bottom of Schoharie Reservoir, more than 2,000 feet of subsurface tunnels, and a valve chamber along Schoharie Creek. Stiver Engineering was retained by the contractor to provide construction consulting through access shaft design, cofferdam design, tunnel design, pipe brake design, and pipe bulkhead design, among other services.

Other featured Stiver projects include:

  • The Integrated Pipeline Project in Athens, Texas
  • The DWU Elm Fork Water Main Project in Carrollton, Texas
  • The Trinity River Tunnel Integrated Pipeline Project in Kerens, Texas
  • The Bois D’Arc Treated Water Pipeline Segment E Tunnel Project in McKinney, Texas
